Well, listen here: New music as a sounding experiment in Düsseldorf

On Wednesday, December 2, 2026, the notabu.ensemble neue musik will transform the Trautvetter-Brückner-Saal of the Tonhalle Düsseldorf into an open sound workshop. The chamber music series “Well, listen here” focuses on contemporary music, surprising ensembles, and a close audience experience with the musicians.

Sound colors between precision and surprise

The program features Thomas Blomenkamp's “musica piccola” for alto saxophone, cello, and piano, excerpts from György Kurtág's “Játékok” in an arrangement for accordion, Emmanuel Séjourné's “Khamsin” for two marimba players, György Ligeti's “Three Pieces for Two Pianos,” as well as Andy Akiho's “Ligneous No. 1 and 4” for marimba and string quartet.

The orchestration thrives on sharply contoured sound colors, percussive energy, and finely tuned synchronization. Sometimes a fragile chamber music shimmer emerges, at other times a rhythmic pull fills the hall with pulsating patterns. The stage becomes an experimental space for new and latest music.

The notabu.ensemble neue musik

The ensemble was founded in 1983 from a student initiative at what was then the Robert Schumann Institute of the University of Music in Rhineland. Since 2003, the series “Well, listen here” has presented works of the present and recent past. Programmatic red threads and moderated concerts open the demanding sound language even for curious listeners without prior experience.

Introduction with Spacewalk

30 minutes before the concert starts, the introduction series “Spacewalk” offers the opportunity to get to know the composers and works of the evening. This provides orientation before the focused live atmosphere unfolds in the Trautvetter-Brückner-Saal.

Conclusion: Experience contemporary music up close

“Well, listen here” promises not a concert by fixed standards, but an immediate concert experience between sound research, virtuoso stage performance, and intense audience mood. Those who want to not just hear new music but experience its full spatial and emotional impact should discover this evening live at the Tonhalle Düsseldorf.
