The Wish Punch: Düsseldorf's enchanting Christmas tradition returns

When the lights dim in the Düsseldorf Puppet Theatre, a journey into a world of magic, black humor, and fine stagecraft begins. On Saturday, December 12, 2026, Michael Ende's The satanarchaeolügenialkohöllische Wish Punch will be on the program at Palais Wittgenstein at 8:00 PM – an atmospheric magical farce for adults and children aged eight and older.

A Pact Against Time

The story takes us into the laboratory of the wizard Beelzebub Irrwitzer and the money witch Tyrannja Vamperl. Both are under immense time pressure: They must complete their destructive spells by the end of the year. The titular wish punch promises limitless power, but behind its fairy-tale shine lurks a dangerous reversal of all good wishes.

The dramaturgy combines fast-paced adventure with an ecologically and socially aware allegory. Michael Ende's fantasy designs a world where greed, responsibility, and the salvation of creation wrestle with each other. The puppet theatre translates these grand themes into precisely guided characters, pointed dialogues, and a performance full of visual surprises.

Puppet Art with Cult Status

The production has been a part of the permanent repertoire of the Düsseldorf Puppet Theatre since its premiere in December 1990. With well over 1,100 performances, it is considered the most performed piece of the house and has long become a special Christmas tradition in Düsseldorf.

At the heart are the artfully manipulated puppets, whose movements fluctuate between grotesque comedy and eerie precision. The stage design, costumes, and lighting create a fairy-tale theater atmosphere, where every movement gains meaning. The acoustics of the small house enhance the immediate character of the stage experience: The audience experiences theatrical art not from a great distance, but in concentrated proximity.

Magical Farce for Adults and Children

With a performance duration of approximately 130 minutes including an intermission, The Wish Punch offers a complete theater evening. The production is aimed at adults and children aged eight and older and combines sophisticated dramaturgy with humor, excitement, and fairy-tale fantasy.

This very mix makes the evening appealing: Children discover talking characters, magical apparatuses, and wild transformations, while adults read the satirical jabs and the timeless question of personal responsibility. This generates an audience reaction that ranges from wonder to liberating laughter.

Conclusion: A Christmas Evening Full of Stage Magic

The Wish Punch at the Düsseldorf Puppet Theatre promises an unusual Christmas experience between puppet theater, literary adaptation, and musical magical farce. Those who want to experience Michael Ende's fantasy world live will find at Palais Wittgenstein an evening of theater art with handcrafted stagecraft, luminous images, and a story that resonates even after the final applause.
