BODEN in Düsseldorf: Voguing, History and the Reappropriation of Space
With BODEN, Sophie Yukiko and ZOE bring an immersive dance performance to the stage of tanzhaus nrw. Based on Silvia Federici's reflections on land, community, ownership, and the consequences of the witch hunts, the world premiere combines political reflection with the powerful language of voguing.
When Dance Becomes Ritual
In the Great Hall, a concentrated event experience emerges that connects body, space, and memory. The artists approach the archetype of the witch from a Black, German perspective, questioning national identity, exclusion, and the construction of a non-white, non-German unity.
Voguing as a Language of Resistance
Voguing originates from the queer ballroom subculture and shapes the choreographic signature of BODEN. Precise poses, dynamic movements, and conscious body images meet a political text that connects historical violence with contemporary questions of visibility, belonging, and self-determination.
Sophie Yukiko and ZOE
Sophie Yukiko works as a German-American artist in film and theater. In her work, she explores rituals through dance and text, bringing her experience from the ballroom scene into political art contexts. ZOE is an interdisciplinary performance artist and curator from Düsseldorf. As a member of the first ballroom generation in Germany, she engages with transformation, rehabilitation, physicality, and the reappropriation of space.
An Evening of International Understanding
The 60-minute performance will be presented in German and English and will be accompanied with subtitles in the respective other language. The tanzhaus nrw co-produces the work together with HAU Berlin. The production is funded by the Kunststiftung NRW as well as by the Ministry of Culture and Science of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia.
Conclusion
BODEN promises an intense event atmosphere between dance, text, and social analysis. Those who want to experience contemporary performance, voguing, and political theater live in Düsseldorf will find an evening with a clear stance, strong imagery, and moving audience spirit.
