Under One Sky: Japanese Art Between Gods, Humans, and Animals
How do humans understand their place in a world that they share with gods, animals, and other humans? The exhibition Under One Sky. 400 Years of Gods, Humans, and Animals in Japanese Art addresses this timeless question with around seventy masterpieces from the collection of Viktor and Marianne Langen. Starting October 23, 2026, the Langen Foundation will provide a concentrated look at four centuries of Japanese art history.
A Multilayered Visual World of Japanese Art
The exhibition takes visitors through a visual world where the divine, the human, and the animal do not appear as separate spheres. Rather, nature, spirituality, and everyday life combine to form a common cosmological order. This perspective makes the exhibition a unique art experience: it invites contemplation of the works while simultaneously opening a space for questions about belonging, responsibility, and the relationship of humans to their environment.
Screen Panels, Hanging Scrolls, and Precious Small Arts
Displayed are screen panels, hanging scrolls, horizontal scrolls, sculptures, inrō, netsuke, and handcrafted objects. The different formats showcase the extraordinary range of Japanese art and its materials. Finely crafted surfaces, precise lines, narrative image spaces, and a high degree of craftsmanship combine to create an aesthetic experience that sharpens the focus on both the details and the overall impact of the exhibition space.
Four Centuries Between Spirituality and Everyday Life
The works unfold a panorama of Japanese art history spanning around 400 years. Their motifs reference religious concepts, mythical narratives, animals as symbolic beings, and observations of daily life. In this context, an artistic direction emerges that not only depicts nature but also makes it an experienced, sentient, and meaningful dimension.
Art in the Ando Building of the Langen Foundation
The presentation takes place in the architecture conceived by Tadao Ando for the Langen Foundation. The interplay of clear geometric forms, calm surfaces, and carefully directed light creates a concentrated exhibition atmosphere. A dialogue arises between the architecture and the exhibits, effectively highlighting the quiet precision of Japanese art and supporting cultural education through immediate observation.
Conclusion: An Exhibition as an Invitation to Change Perspectives
Under One Sky combines art historical context with sensual contemplation of the works. Visitors can expect an encounter with rare iconographies, outstanding artistic quality, and a visual language that relates humans, animals, nature, and spirituality. Those who wish to not only observe Japanese art but also experience it as an open realm of thought and experience will find a particularly deep exhibition at the Langen Foundation.
