Max Frintrop: Presentation Space at Bilker Bunker
With Presentation Space, the Bilker Bunker will showcase for the first time an extensive solo exhibition by Max Frintrop in his hometown Düsseldorf from November 6 to December 6, 2026. The exhibition gathers large-format abstract paintings as well as smaller works, thus opening up different approaches to an art where color, movement, and material merge into intense spatial visual worlds.
Abstract Painting Between Intuition and Decision
Max Frintrop, born in 1982 in Oberhausen, lives and works in Düsseldorf. From 2003 to 2009, he studied at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf under Albert Oehlen and completed his studies as a master student with the Academy certificate. His painting exists in the tension between gestural abstraction, spatial color, and material exploration.
Color, ink, and pigments layer in his works to create multi-layered surfaces. Lines, shapes, and color fields do not appear static but seem to move across the picture plane. The viewing of the works thus becomes an aesthetic experience where perception continually reorders itself.
Painting Meets the Architecture of the Bunker
The Bilker Bunker does not provide a neutral exhibition space. Its massive concrete architecture, the dense materiality, and the special spatial effect engage in a direct dialogue with Frintrop's paintings. Between wall, surface, and picture space, an art experience arises that shifts the boundaries between depicted and real space.
The large-format works unfold a physical presence in the bunker. Smaller pieces simultaneously allow for a more concentrated access to Frintrop's working method. Proximity and distance, spontaneous gesture and conscious decision, visual density and open picture spaces become guiding motifs of the exhibition.
A Düsseldorf Artist with International Presence
Frintrop's works have been exhibited, among others, in the Kunstmuseum Bonn, in the Deichtorhallen Hamburg, in the Museum Wiesbaden, in the Museum Gunzenhauser Chemnitz, and in the Mies van der Rohe Haus Berlin. The Kunstmuseum Bonn included a work by the artist in its collection in 2019. Thus, Presentation Space also stands for the return of an internationally exhibited painter to a central place in his artistic development.
Exhibition Atmosphere and Cultural Education
The exhibition combines art historical classification with immediate presentation. Visitors experience how abstract painting gains significance through material, light, scale, and architecture. Accompanying the exhibition are public tours and private tours for groups of up to 15 persons. A book presentation with an Artist Talk by Max Dax and Max Frintrop will take place on November 27, 2026.
Conclusion: Abstract Art in Dialogue with Concrete
Presentation Space promises a concentrated art experience between gestural painting, colorful depth effects, and monumental architecture. Anyone who wants to not only observe the aesthetic experience of abstract art but also spatially experience it should visit this exhibition live at Bilker Bunker.
