Max Frintrop: Presentation Space at Bilker Bunker
With the exhibition Presentation Space, the Bilker Bunker presents for the first time a comprehensive solo exhibition by Max Frintrop in his hometown Düsseldorf. On November 27, 2026, the visit to the exhibition will be combined with a book presentation and an artist talk with Max Dax and Max Frintrop.
Abstract Painting between Color, Movement, and Space
Max Frintrop, born in 1982 in Oberhausen, studied from 2003 to 2009 at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf and completed his studies as a master student of Albert Oehlen. His painting operates within the field of contemporary abstraction and develops multifaceted, spatial image worlds from color, ink, and pigments.
Large-format works unfold an intense presence: color fields, gestural placements, and transparent layers enter into a dynamic tension. Frintrop's work emerges from direct engagement with material, movement, and color – between intuitive approach and conscious composition. In addition to the monumental paintings, the exhibition offers a more concentrated access to his visual language through smaller works.
Painting in Dialogue with Concrete and History
The exhibition atmosphere of the Bilker Bunker creates a distinct resonance space for Frintrop's art. The massive concrete architecture, its historical imprint, and the raw-looking surfaces engage in direct dialogue with the color-intensive canvases. Painting and place thus shift the perception of space, scale, and material.
The contemplation of the works promises an aesthetic experience in which image space and exhibition space reflect each other. The interplay between large-format impact and concentrated close examination makes the exhibition a compelling art experience for lovers of abstract painting and for all who wish to experience contemporary art in an unusual architecture.
Book Presentation and Artist Talk on November 27
On Friday, November 27, 2026, in addition to the exhibition, the encounter with the artist will be the focus. The book presentation and the conversation between Max Dax and Max Frintrop will deepen the insight into Frintrop's artistic development, his working method, and the significance of space, material, and perception in his painting.
Conclusion: A Special Exhibition Venue for Contemporary Art
Presentation Space brings together abstract painting and historical architecture for a tension-filled exhibition experience. Visitors can expect a concentrated encounter with color-intensive, material-conscious image worlds as well as an informative artist talk. Those who want to experience the interaction of art, space, and history firsthand should visit this exhibition at the Bilker Bunker live.
