Max Frintrop: Presentation Space at Bilker Bunker
With Presentation Space, the Bilker Bunker presents for the first time a comprehensive solo exhibition of Max Frintrop in his hometown Düsseldorf. From November 6 to December 6, 2026, contemporary painting, striking bunker architecture, and the special materiality of a historical site encounter each other.
Abstract Painting between Color, Movement, and Space
Max Frintrop predominantly works with large-format abstract paintings. Color, ink, and pigments condense into multifaceted image spaces where surface and depth, spontaneous gesture and conscious placement meet directly. The works develop an intense presence and continuously open new spatial effects.
A Düsseldorf Artist Position with International Presence
The artist, born in 1982 in Oberhausen, studied from 2003 to 2009 at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf and completed his studies as a master's student of Albert Oehlen. Frintrop lives and works in Düsseldorf. His works have been exhibited, among others, at the Kunstmuseum Bonn, in the Deichtorhallen Hamburg, in the Museum Wiesbaden, in the Museum Gunzenhauser Chemnitz, and in the Mies van der Rohe House Berlin.
Large-Format Works and Focused Art Viewing
The exhibition brings together large-format works as well as smaller pieces. This creates a shift between physically experienceable expansiveness and concentrated art viewing. The aesthetic experience is based on the play of color layers, gestural traces, open forms, and a painting that keeps the gaze in motion.
Painting in Dialogue with Concrete and History
The encounter of the images with the architecture and materiality of the Bilker Bunker is particularly impressive. Concrete, massive walls, and the history of the place enter into an immediate dialogue with the color-intensive visual worlds. The exhibition makes the exhibition space itself a part of perception and directs attention to questions of space, surface, and memory.
Accompanying Program and Further Presentations
The exhibition includes a shortcut with works by Yorgos Stamkopoulos from November 20 to 22, 2026, as well as a book presentation and an artist talk with Max Dax and Max Frintrop on November 27, 2026. An additional presentation in the premises of the Kreissparkasse Düsseldorf opens on November 10, 2026.
Conclusion: An Art Experience between Intuition and Construction
Presentation Space promises an intense exhibition atmosphere in which abstract painting and historical architecture open new perspectives on space and perception. Art enthusiasts experience Max Frintrop's works not just as images, but as physically impactful situations. A visit to the Bilker Bunker enriches cultural education and creates space for an immediate aesthetic experience.
