Max Frintrop: Imaginative Space – abstract painting in the Bilker Bunker

With the exhibition Imaginative Space, the Bilker Bunker will showcase the first comprehensive solo exhibition of Max Frintrop in his hometown Düsseldorf from November 6 to December 6, 2026. On Saturday, November 21, the exhibition space will open from 2 PM to 9 PM for an intense art experience between large-format painting, focused image spaces, and the distinctive concrete architecture of the bunker.

Color, Movement, and Spatial Depth

Max Frintrop predominantly works with abstract painting. Color, ink, and pigments combine to create multifaceted visual worlds, where flatness and spatial effect are constantly recalibrated. His works arise from an immediate engagement with material, movement, and color. Intuitive gestures collide with deliberate placements, creating a visually dynamic tension.

Large Formats and Concentrated Image Worlds

The exhibition presents not only large-format works but also smaller pieces. This opens a differentiated approach to Frintrop's painting: While the large canvases captivate the view with expansive presence and deep spatial color layers, the smaller works compress the viewing experience to a concentrated measure. Lines, pigments, overlays, and open forms invite an aesthetic experience that unfolds only with prolonged viewing.

Painting in Dialogue with Concrete

The architecture of the Bilker Bunker does not provide a neutral background. Its materiality, weight, and layered spatial effect enter into an immediate dialogue with Frintrop’s painting. Hard concrete surfaces meet dynamic color structures, closed architecture confronts open abstract image spaces. From this connection, a unique exhibition atmosphere emerges, where painting becomes an experiential spatial event.

Art Historical Contextualization

Frintrop studied at the Art Academy Düsseldorf under Albert Oehlen and completed his studies in 2009 as a master student. His position is situated within the tradition of contemporary abstraction, expanding it through a physically impactful, material-conscious painting practice. Exhibitions, among others, at the Kunstmuseum Bonn, Deichtorhallen Hamburg, Museum Wiesbaden, and Mies van der Rohe House Berlin, showcase the national and international presence of his work.

Cultural Education through Accurate Perception

Imaginative Space offers an opportunity to directly experience the fundamentals of abstract art: How does spatial depth arise without representational depiction? What role do pigments, material, and gesture play? And how does an architectural site change the perception of an image? The exhibition combines sensual experience with art historical reflection, making the observation of the work a form of cultural education.

Conclusion: An Artistic Experience between Image and Space

Visitors can expect an exhibition in which abstract painting, materiality, and bunker architecture enter into an intense relationship. Those who want to discover color as movement, space as perception, and painting as a physical experience should live experience Max Frintrop's Imaginative Space at the Bilker Bunker.
