Max Frintrop at Bilker Bunker: Painting as Imaginative Space

With the exhibition Imaginative Space, Bilker Bunker presents a comprehensive solo exhibition of Max Frintrop in his hometown Düsseldorf for the first time. From November 6 to December 6, 2026, abstract painting, intense color materiality, and the distinctive architecture of a former air raid shelter come together.

Abstract Visual Worlds between Color and Movement

Max Frintrop, born in 1982 in Oberhausen, studied at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf and completed his studies in 2009 as a master student of Albert Oehlen. His painting combines color, ink, and pigments into multi-layered visual spaces where forms condense, overlap, and dissolve. Between spontaneous gesture and conscious placement, an art emerges that does not fix perception but keeps it in motion.

Large-Scale Painting Meets Concrete

At Bilker Bunker, large-scale works unfold an intense spatial presence. Their color depth effects enter into a direct dialogue with the massive concrete walls, the enclosed spatial sequences, and the historical materiality of the place. The exhibition makes visible how strongly an artwork is shaped by its environment: painting and architecture intertwine into an aesthetic experience between interior space, memory, and imagined vastness.

Focused Examination of Works in Small Format

In addition to the large canvases, smaller works are on display. They offer a more concentrated approach to Frintrop's working method and draw attention to layering, surface, pigment, and drawing movement. In quiet contemplation of the works, those transitions become apparent where color transforms into spatial imagination and material becomes visual energy.

Art Historical Context and Düsseldorf Context

Frintrop's position stands in the tradition of contemporary, non-representational painting that understands the image as an open space for thought and experience. His works have been shown, among others, at the Kunstmuseum Bonn, Deichtorhallen Hamburg, Museum Wiesbaden, Museum Mies van der Rohe Haus Berlin, and Museum Kunstpalast Düsseldorf. The exhibition at Bilker Bunker brings this regionally and internationally present artistic development back to its Düsseldorf starting point.

Accompanying Program and Exhibition Dates

The exhibition is open on Fridays and Saturdays from 2:00 PM to 9:00 PM and on Sundays from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM. On November 27, 2026, there will be a book presentation with an artist talk by Max Dax and Max Frintrop. From November 20 to 22, a shortcut featuring works by Yorgos Stamkopoulos will complement the program.

Conclusion: An Art Experience between History and Present

Imaginative Space promises an intense encounter with contemporary painting in an extraordinary exhibition venue. Those who want to experience how color, movement, concrete, and memory merge into new spatial imaginations will find an exhibition of special atmospheric density at Bilker Bunker. A visit opens up cultural education, intensive examination of the works, and an aesthetic experience that resonates long after.
