Max Frintrop at Bilker Bunker: Painting between Color, Movement, and Space

With the exhibition Imagination Space, the Bilker Bunker will showcase a comprehensive solo exhibition of Max Frintrop for the first time in his hometown Düsseldorf from November 6th to December 6th, 2026. The visit on November 28th leads to an extraordinary encounter with contemporary abstract painting, raw concrete, and deep spatial perception.

Abstract Visual Worlds with Physical Presence

Max Frintrop, born in 1982 in Oberhausen, studied at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf from 2003 to 2009 and completed his studies as a master student of Albert Oehlen. His large-scale canvases combine color, ink, pigments, and pasty brushstrokes into dynamic visual spaces. Between spontaneous gesture and conscious placement, a painting emerges that interweaves surface, movement, and spatial effect.

Color as Material and Event

Frintrop's works invite concentrated viewing. Color surfaces overlap, traces accumulate, and relief-like color masses give the images an almost sculptural quality. The aesthetic experience arises from the interplay between immediate energy and precise composition. Large formats unfold an expansive effect, while smaller works offer a more concentrated access to his painting.

The Bilker Bunker as a Dialogue Partner

The exhibition architecture of the Bilker Bunker significantly shapes the art experience. Concrete, weight, and closed spaces meet vibrant color spaces, open movements, and fragile transitions. In this curatorial constellation, painting and location encounter each other directly. The historical materiality of the bunker does not become a neutral background, but a resonance space for perception, scale, and atmosphere.

Düsseldorf Art History and International Presence

Frintrop is closely connected to the Düsseldorf art scene and simultaneously develops an internationally visible position within contemporary abstract painting. His works have been exhibited, among others, in the Kunstmuseum Bonn, Museum Wiesbaden, Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz, Deichtorhallen Hamburg, and Mies van der Rohe Haus Berlin. The Kunstmuseum Bonn is also one of the public collections in which the artist's works are represented.

Accompanying Program for the Exhibition

The exhibition includes a book presentation and an artist talk with Max Dax and Max Frintrop on November 27th, 2026. From November 20th to 22nd, a shortcut with works by Yorgos Stamkopoulos will complement the presentation. Another presentation in the rooms of Kreissparkasse Düsseldorf will open on November 10th, 2026.

Conclusion: An Artistic Experience in the Tension between Image and Space

Imagination Space promises an intense aesthetic experience between gestural painting, color depth, and the unique atmosphere of the Bilker Bunker. Art enthusiasts will experience how abstract images not only depict space but also make it physically perceivable. Those who wish to discover contemporary painting in its sensual, material, and art historical dimension should visit this exhibition live.
