Max Frintrop opens a new exhibition space in Bilker Bunker
With the exhibition Exhibition Space, Bilker Bunker presents, for the first time, a comprehensive solo exhibition of Max Frintrop in his hometown Düsseldorf from November 6 to December 6, 2026. The art experience leads into a painting that combines color, ink, and pigments into multi-layered, deep spatial image worlds.
Abstract painting between movement and establishment
Max Frintrop, born in 1982 in Oberhausen, studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy and graduated in 2009 as a master student of Albert Oehlen. His abstract painting emerges from an immediate engagement with material, movement, and color. Spontaneous gestural impulses encounter deliberate compositional decisions, creating a tension-filled visual language.
Color as a spatial experience
Large-format works unfold an intense presence in the exhibition space. Fields of color, ink lines, and pigment layers condense into open image spaces where foreground and background interact. The viewing of the works becomes an aesthetic experience: forms seem to shift, surfaces emerge, and the painting creates an almost physical spatial effect.
Painting in dialogue with concrete
The architecture and materiality of the Bilker Bunker form an essential resonance space for the exhibition. Concrete, massive walls, and the special light atmosphere of the place meet Frintrop's color-intensive painting directly. Alongside large-format works, smaller pieces are on display that provide a concentrated access to his artistic practice.
Düsseldorf art scene and international presence
Frintrop's work is closely connected to the Düsseldorf art scene and simultaneously has an international presence. Works by the artist have been exhibited, among others, at the Kunstmuseum Bonn, the Deichtorhallen Hamburg, the Wiesbaden Museum, the Gunzenhauser Museum Chemnitz, and the Mies van der Rohe House Berlin. The Kunstmuseum Bonn included a work in its collection in 2019.
Art experience in Bilker Bunker
The exhibition combines contemporary painting with cultural education and a pronounced site-specific curation. Visitors experience how abstract art changes perception and allows a unique visual reality to emerge from color, material, and space.
Those who wish to experience Frintrop's painting not only in reproduction but in its spatial intensity will find an impressive access in the Bilker Bunker. Exhibition Space promises a concentrated aesthetic experience between Düsseldorf art history, gestural abstraction, and monumental concrete architecture.
