Max Frintrop at Bilker Bunker: Painting as a Spatial Event
With Concept Space, Bilker Bunker presents the first comprehensive solo exhibition of Max Frintrop in his hometown Düsseldorf. The exhibition connects contemporary abstract painting with the distinctive architecture and materiality of the former bunker. On Sunday, November 8, 2026, an art experience unfolds between color, movement, depth, and concrete from 2 PM to 6 PM.
Abstract Visual Worlds between Intuition and Establishment
Max Frintrop, born in 1982 in Oberhausen, lives and works in Düsseldorf. From 2003 to 2009, he studied at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf in Albert Oehlen's class and graduated as a master student. His painting oscillates between gestural abstraction, material densification, and an acute sensitivity to spatial effect.
Color, ink, and pigments transform into multi-layered image bodies. Large-format works develop an intense presence, while smaller works open a more concentrated access to Frintrop's art. The contemplation of his works does not follow a narrative depiction, but an aesthetic experience, where movement, rhythm, surface, and depth interact directly.
Painting Meets the Architecture of the Bunker
The exhibition atmosphere arises from the direct dialogue between the images and the Bilker Bunker. Concrete, massive walls, and the unique spatial effect of the place relate to the open, dynamic compositions. The result is not a neutral presentation but a curated encounter of painting and architecture.
In this tension, colors unfold an almost physical quality. Pigments appear as traces of movement, dark areas create depth, light formations make the surface vibrate. The historical site becomes a space of perception, where the boundaries between picture surface, wall, and environment shift.
A Düsseldorf Artist with International Presence
Frintrop's works have been exhibited at the Kunstmuseum Bonn, the Museum Wiesbaden, the Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz, the Deichtorhallen Hamburg, and the Museum Kunstpalast Düsseldorf, among others. His artistic position is closely linked to the Düsseldorf art scene and has also been exhibited internationally, including in New York, Milan, Brussels, Berlin, and San Diego.
The exhibition thus addresses central questions of contemporary painting: How does space emerge on a two-dimensional surface? How does material affect the perception of color? And what physical effect can abstract painting have in an architecturally charged environment?
Supporting Program and Further Presentations
The exhibition includes additional events: From November 20 to 22, 2026, a shortcut featuring works by Yorgos Stamkopoulos is planned. On November 27, 2026, a book presentation and an artist talk with Max Dax and Max Frintrop will follow. An additional presentation in the rooms of the Kreissparkasse Düsseldorf opens on November 10, 2026.
Conclusion: An Art Experience between Color, Space, and Concrete
Concept Space promises a concentrated encounter with contemporary painting and an extraordinary exhibition venue. Visitors will experience large-format and smaller works by Max Frintrop in an atmosphere where color, material, light, and architecture intertwine. Those who want to not only observe abstract art but experience it physically should visit this exhibition at Bilker Bunker live.
