Alexandra Bircken: Silver Lining – a visual archive between body, image, and material
At the Langen Foundation, Alexandra Bircken unfolds an extraordinary art experience with Silver Lining: A twenty-three meter long collage leads through the visual universe of the artist. Photographs, newspaper clippings, magazine pages, screenshots, readymades, and self-made materials connect to form an open archive between personal memory and popular culture.
A stream of images and things
The atmosphere of the exhibition arises from the immediate proximity of the most diverse fragments. Image motifs from three decades encounter each other without chronological order. Repetition, grids, and symmetrical arrangements create ornamental structures, while organic textures, raw materials, and irritating everyday objects break through the smooth surface of image culture.
Six constellations of a moving image world
The curation makes six recurring constellations tangible: ornamental order, commercialized femininity, raw matter, circulating crisis, reconstructed bodies, and domestic absurdity. These areas do not form closed categories. Meanings move between the images and arise primarily through proximity, repetition, and formal echoes.
From sculpture to collage
Bircken is known for her sculptures and installations in which materiality, physicality, movement, and social life form central questions. Silver Lining presents an extensive collage in contrast to this three-dimensional practice. It is not the individual object that takes center stage, but the network of relationships. The act of selection itself becomes an artistic process.
Photographic silver and hidden layers
The title refers to two material levels: Silver recalls silver halide, which was once used to fix light on photographic paper. Lining refers to the hidden inner layer of a garment, which gives support to its outer form. In this connection, Bircken's interest in surfaces, coverings, bodies, and the invisible structures behind images condenses.
Aesthetic experience and cultural education
The viewing of the works invites one to question their own perception patterns. Familiar motifs initially appear clear but transform into an open abstraction through their aggregation. Colors, shapes, materials, and image fragments generate a visual tension that oscillates between intimacy, consumption, crisis, and bodily transformation. Thus, the exhibition becomes a place of aesthetic experience and cultural education.
