Alexandra Bircken: Silver Lining – a visual archive in motion
With Silver Lining, the Langen Foundation presents an extraordinary exhibition by artist Alexandra Bircken. At the center is a twenty-three meter long collage of photographs, newspaper clippings, magazine pages, screenshots, readymades, and self-made materials. The work navigates through a personal and simultaneously socially influenced universe of image culture.
A collage as an open thought image
The monumental work gathers material that Bircken has collected and produced since the early 1990s. Personal memories meet popular culture, news images meet advertising, fashion images meet organic textures. From the close-up of individual fragments emerges a complex overall effect: What initially appears clearly readable condenses into an open abstraction during the tour.
Between sculpture, body and image culture
Silver Lining forms a counterpoint to Alexandra Bircken's sculptural practice. While her sculptures raise questions about materiality, corporeality, and social life, the collage unfolds this investigation through a network of images and objects. The exhibition shifts the focus from the isolated individual work to the relationship between fragments, structures, and meanings.
Six constellations in the visual universe
Recurring motifs structure the examination of the work: ornamental order with grids and symmetry, commercialized femininity, raw organic matter, circulating crisis images, reconstructed bodies, and domestic absurdity. These constellations do not form strictly separated categories. They act as attractive points between which meanings wander and new connections arise.
A metabolic work process
The exhibition makes visible that Bircken understands her collage as an ongoing, metabolic process. New material can be incorporated at any time; technically the work remains unfinished. The title refers both to photographic silver halide and the hidden lining of a garment. In it, image history, fashion, body, and the invisible structures that shape perception merge.
Alexandra Bircken and her art historical classification
Alexandra Bircken, born in 1967 in Cologne, studied fashion design at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London and initially worked as a designer. Her artistic practice combines sculpture, installation, textiles, fashion, and everyday materials. Her works have been seen in venues including Secession Vienna, Fridericianum Kassel, Museum Brandhorst Munich, and KINDL – Center for Contemporary Art Berlin. In 2019, she participated in the 58th Biennale di Venezia. Since 2023, she has been teaching at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf.
Conclusion: Aesthetic experience between order and overwhelming
Visitors can expect an intense art experience between archive, installation, and visual research. The exhibition atmosphere arises from the constant interplay of color, surface, material, and image fragments. Silver Lining invites viewers to reconsider their own image world and to directly uncover cultural connections through aesthetic experience. A visit to the Langen Foundation offers a profound examination of contemporary art.
