Alexandra Bircken: Silver Lining – a visual universe at the Langen Foundation
With Silver Lining, the Langen Foundation presents an extraordinary exhibition by the artist Alexandra Bircken. At its center is a twenty-three-meter-long collage of photographs, newspaper clippings, magazine pages, screenshots, readymades, and materials that Bircken has collected or created since the early 1990s. The exhibition connects personal memory, popular image culture, and contemporary art into an atmospheric artistic experience.
An image archive between everyday life, body, and society
The monumental collage unfolds as a walkable visual archive. Individual motifs initially appear immediately readable, but gain a new, almost abstract significance in their dense proximity. Bircken organizes the fragments not chronologically, but according to formal echoes, recurring structures, and shared textures. This creates an open curation where meanings constantly shift between images, objects, and materials.
Six constellations as orientation
The examination of the works follows six recurring constellations: Ornamental Order explores grids, repetition, and symmetry. Commercialized Femininity confronts cosmetics, jewelry, and editorial body images with their reduction to surface and product. Raw Material sets organic materials and unruly textures against the smooth world of goods.
In the constellation Circulating Crisis, news images, advertising, and corporate representations meet. Reconstructed Bodies combine mechanical, orthopedic, and cyborg-like forms. Domestic Absurdity transforms familiar objects and private snapshots into irritating image situations through exaggeration.
Between sculpture, collage, and aesthetic experience
Alexandra Bircken is primarily known for her sculptures that explore materiality, physicality, and social life. Silver Lining serves as a conscious counterpoint to this. It is not the autonomous single object that takes center stage, but the network of fragments. The work prioritizes relationships over closure and selection over an apparently definitive form.
The title also refers to silver halide as a light-sensitive material of photography and to the lining of a garment, that hidden layer that gives form support. In this dual meaning, the history of the photographic image connects with Bircken's interest in clothing, bodies, surfaces, and inner structures.
Alexandra Bircken in contemporary art
Alexandra Bircken was born in Cologne in 1967. She studied fashion design at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London and taught there in the master program for fashion. After returning to Cologne, she founded the shop Alex, where she developed objects and accessories. Studio residencies took her to the Imhoff Foundation, Studio Voltaire in London, and the National Gallery in Harare, among others.
Bircken participated in the 58th Venice Biennale in 2019. Solo exhibitions have taken place at the Secession Vienna, Fridericianum Kassel, Museum Brandhorst Munich, and KINDL – Center for Contemporary Art Berlin, among others. From 2018 to 2023, she held a professorship at the Academy of Fine Arts Munich; since 2023, she has been teaching at the Art Academy Düsseldorf.
Conclusion: A tour through an open image universe
Visitors can expect an exhibition that makes familiar images from advertising, media, fashion, and everyday life newly readable. The exhibition atmosphere arises from the tension between order and abundance, intimacy and publicity, body and material. Silver Lining invites focused contemplation of the works and a lasting aesthetic experience. Those wishing to experience contemporary collage, installation, and sculpture in dialogue should not miss this unusual artistic experience at the Langen Foundation.
