Alexandra Bircken: Silver Lining – a visual archive between body, material, and image culture

With Silver Lining, the Langen Foundation presents an extraordinary work by artist Alexandra Bircken. At the center is a twenty-three meter long collage of photographs, newspaper clippings, magazine pages, screenshots, readymades, and personal materials that Bircken has collected and created since the early 1990s.

A collage as a walkable universe

The exhibition unfolds as a dense visual archive between personal memory and popular culture. Different image fragments, materials, and surfaces relate to one another. In observing the work, the gaze shifts from the individual motif to the tension between proximity, repetition, and formal resonance.

Six constellations of a moving image world

In the twenty-three meter long work, recurring constellations can be recognized: ornamental order, commercialized femininity, raw material, circulating crisis, reconstructed bodies, and domestic absurdity. Grids, symmetries, organic textures, news images, body fragments, and everyday objects merge into an open composition.

Bircken does not arrange the material chronologically and does not establish a hierarchy between image and object. Meaning arises from proximity, repetition, and the collision of heterogeneous fragments. Thus, the seemingly unambiguously readable individual image transforms into a multifaceted abstraction.

From sculpture to continuous montage

Alexandra Bircken is primarily known for her sculptural practice, in which materiality, physicality, and social life play a central role. Silver Lining serves as a counterpoint and transfers these questions to the surface. The work is understood not as a finished object, but as a metabolic process that can continue to grow with new material.

The title refers both to photographic silver halide and to the hidden lining of a garment. In this, the history of the photographic image merges with a structural layer that provides support to the visible. The aesthetic experience of the exhibition arises from this interplay of surface, memory, body, and hidden construction.

Art historical classification and curation

Bircken studied fashion design at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London and later taught in the Master's program in Fashion there. Her works have been exhibited among others at the Secession Vienna, Fridericianum Kassel, Museum Brandhorst Munich, and KINDL – Center for Contemporary Art Berlin. In 2019, she took part in the 58th Venice Biennale. Silver Lining is curated by Nadim Samman.

Conclusion: An intense art experience at the Langen Foundation

Visitors can expect a sensual exhibition atmosphere where photography, installation, readymade, and sculptural thinking interconnect. Silver Lining invites you to not only observe image culture but to discover its patterns, breaks, and hidden connections yourself. The exhibition offers a sustainable aesthetic experience and is one of the noteworthy positions in contemporary art in the region.
