Alexandra Bircken: Silver Lining – A Visual Archive Between Body, Material, and Image Culture
At the Langen Foundation, Alexandra Bircken unfolds a twenty-three meter long collage as a walkable conceptual piece with Silver Lining. Photographs, newspaper clippings, magazine pages, screenshots, readymades, and her own material combine to create a visual archive that intertwines personal memory and popular culture. The exhibition opens up an intense art experience between artwork observation, aesthetic experience, and art historical reflection.
A Collage as an Open Universe
The work is based on materials that Bircken has collected and produced since the early 1990s. Her curation does not follow a linear chronology. Instead, relationships emerge through formal echoes, recurring structures, and shared textures. Individual motifs remain initially decipherable but transform into a multifaceted abstraction in the overall view.
Six Constellations of the Image World
The exhibition is divided into six recurring focal points: ornamental order, commercialized femininity, raw matter, circulating crisis, reconstructed bodies, and domestic absurdity. Grids, repetitions, and symmetrical arrangements meet organic surfaces, news images, advertising, mechanical forms, and private snapshots. The exhibition makes visible how meanings wander between image, object, and body.
From the Sculptural Body to the Fragmented Image Surface
Silver Lining serves as a counterpoint to Bircken's sculptural practice. Her three-dimensional works investigate materiality, corporeality, and social life; the collage translates these questions into a network of fragments. The work does not place the isolated single object at the center but rather relationships, selections, and connections. Thus, the collage itself becomes an open installation that constantly evolves conceptually.
Alexandra Bircken in the Context of Contemporary Art
Born in Cologne in 1967, Alexandra Bircken studied fashion design at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London. After experiences as a designer and working with fashion objects, she developed an independent artistic practice between sculpture, installation, material research, and image culture. Her works have been exhibited among others in the Secession Vienna, in Fridericianum Kassel, in Museum Brandhorst Munich, and in KINDL – Center for Contemporary Art Berlin. Since 2023, Bircken has been teaching at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf.
Aesthetic Experience at the Langen Foundation
The exhibition atmosphere of the Langen Foundation enhances the contemplative character of the work. In the interplay of architecture, spatial effects, and the long image stretch, a parcours is created that repeatedly shifts the gaze between detail and totality. Visitors encounter an art that does not explain familiar images but reorders them and thereby conveys cultural education as a sensory experience.
Conclusion: Silver Lining invites art enthusiasts as a concentrated encounter with an open, materially rich, and socially aware image world. The twenty-three meter long collage makes visible how memory, media images, bodies, and everyday objects are connected to a contemporary form of sculpture. A visit to the Langen Foundation promises a sustainable reflection on the work and cultural enrichment – this exhibition should be experienced live.
