Alexandra Bircken's Silver Lining: A Visual Archive Between Body, Material, and Image Culture
At the Langen Foundation, visitors encounter Silver Lining, an extraordinary twenty-three-meter-long collage by Alexandra Bircken. The exhibition combines photographs, newspaper clippings, magazine pages, screenshots, readymades, and her own material that the artist has collected and produced since the early 1990s. On November 26, 2026, this multifaceted art experience invites focused contemplation of the work.
A Tour Through Alexandra Bircken's Universe
The installation unfolds as an open visual archive between personal memory and popular culture. Individual images initially appear distinctly readable; however, they develop new meanings in their immediate context. The curation by Nadim Samman organizes the material not chronologically and hierarchically but through formal echoes, recurring structures, and shared textures.
Six Constellations Between Order and Absurdity
In the exhibition atmosphere, ornamental order meets commercialized femininity, raw material, circulating crises, reconstructed bodies, and domestic absurdity. Grids, repetitions, and symmetrical arrangements confront organic surfaces, news images, advertising, jewelry, cosmetics, and mechanical body forms. This creates an installation where system and ornament, surface and vulnerability, everyday life and alienation constantly merge.
From Sculpture to Open Collage
Bircken's sculptural practice revolves around materiality, physicality, and social life. Silver Lining translates these questions into an extensive collage. The individual fragment does not stand alone; the network of relationships becomes crucial. The work remains open as a metabolic process and can continue to grow with new material.
Silver Image and Hidden Layer
The title refers both to silver halide, with which photographic light was once fixed on paper, and to the lining of a garment that stabilizes its shape from the inside. This dual meaning shapes the aesthetic experience of the exhibition: Images accumulated over decades condense into a unity, while a hidden structure increasingly becomes visible.
Art Historical Context and Artist Biography
Alexandra Bircken, born in 1967 in Cologne, studied fashion design at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London and initially worked as a designer. Her artistic development connects fashion, object art, installation, and sculpture. Bircken participated in the 58th Venice Biennale in 2019 and has held solo exhibitions at, among others, the Secession Wien, Fridericianum Kassel, Museum Brandhorst Munich, and KINDL – Center for Contemporary Art Berlin. Since 2023, she has been teaching at the Düsseldorf Academy of Art.
Conclusion: An Art Experience Between Fragment and Relation
Silver Lining opens a sensual and intellectual examination of images, bodies, commodity aesthetics, and social reality. Visitors can expect a sprawling installation, whose meanings arise only through walking, comparing, and repeated looking. Those who want to directly experience contemporary art, collage, material research, and aesthetic experience will find a particularly compelling exhibition visit at the Langen Foundation.
