Alexandra Bircken: Silver Lining – a visual archive between body, image and material
At the Langen Foundation, visitors encounter Silver Lining, a twenty-three meter long collage by Alexandra Bircken. The work combines photographs, newspaper clippings, magazine pages, screenshots, readymades, and original material into an open visual archive that intertwines personal memory and popular image culture.
A tour through Alexandra Bircken's universe
The exhibition atmosphere is created from the constant movement between individual fragments. No image stands isolated in the center. Only through proximity, repetition, and formal echoes does a complex overall effect develop. The artwork contemplation leads through an intertwining of images, objects, textures, and signs, whose meanings wander between different centers.
Six constellations of contemporary art
The curation by Nadim Samman makes six recurring constellations evident: ornamental order, commercialized femininity, raw material, circulating crisis, reconstructed bodies, and domestic absurdity. Grids, symmetries, and repetitions meet cosmetics, jewelry, news images, organic materials, as well as mechanical and cyborg-like body forms.
With this, Bircken connects art historical questions about materiality, physicality, and social life with a precise analysis of visual everyday culture. Advertising, industry, private snapshots, and popular media appear not as separate areas but as components of a common image space.
Between sculpture, collage, and image culture
Silver Lining serves as a counterpoint to Alexandra Bircken's highly regarded sculptural practice. While her sculptures make physical presence and materiality immediately tangible, the collage unfolds the same questions through a multitude of fragments. The work addresses the relationship over the completed object and the network over the autonomous form.
The title also refers to two material levels: Silver denotes the silver halide of the photographic image, while Lining stands for the hidden inner layer of a piece of clothing. Visible surface and underlying structure combine to form a poetic description of this continually growing work.
Alexandra Bircken: Fashion, body, and social reality
Alexandra Bircken was born in Cologne in 1967. She studied fashion design at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London, founded her own fashion label there, and later worked as a designer for fashion houses in Paris. Her artistic practice developed from the intensive engagement with clothing, bodies, materials, and social roles.
Bircken participated in the 2019 58th Venice Biennale. Her solo exhibitions have been shown, among others, at the Secession in Vienna, Fridericianum in Kassel, Museum Brandhorst in Munich, and KINDL – Center for Contemporary Art in Berlin. Since 2023, she has been teaching at the Art Academy Düsseldorf. The exhibition thus positions itself within an internationally recognized stance of contemporary art.
Art experience in Tadao Ando's architecture
The Langen Foundation is located at the rocket station Hombroich near Neuss and is known for its architecture designed by Tadao Ando. Concrete, glass, water, and clearly defined spatial axes create a concentrated framework for aesthetic experience. The monumental length of the collage enters into a tense dialogue with the reduced architecture and directs the gaze to transitions, repetitions, and material contrasts.
Conclusion: An exhibition as an open image memory
Silver Lining welcomes art enthusiasts as a sensory and analytical art experience. Alexandra Bircken demonstrates how seemingly familiar images, materials, and everyday objects give rise to an independent form of abstraction. Anyone wishing to experience contemporary art, collage, installation, and questions surrounding body, media, and society should definitely visit this exhibition at the Langen Foundation live.
