Alexandra Bircken: Silver Lining – a visual archive at the Langen Foundation

With Silver Lining, Alexandra Bircken transforms the Langen Foundation into an expansive space for thought and perception. At the center is a twenty-three meter long collage made of photographs, newspaper clippings, magazine pages, screenshots, readymades, and her own material that the artist has collected and produced since the early 1990s.

A tour through three decades of image culture

The exhibition navigates through Bircken's personal and socially influenced image archive. Various fragments encounter each other without chronological order. Their connection arises through formal echoes, recurring textures, grids, repetitions, and surprising proximities. From individual, seemingly easily readable motifs, a complex visual abstraction develops.

Between collage, sculpture, and installation

Silver Lining forms a counterpoint to Alexandra Bircken's highly regarded sculptural practice. While her sculptures explore materiality, physicality, and social life in three-dimensional forms, this work unfolds through a multitude of individual images and objects. The curation by Nadim Samman focuses not on the isolated work but on relationships, networks, and selections.

Six constellations as orientation

In the ongoing collage, six recurring constellations emerge: ornamental order, commercialized femininity, raw material, circulating crisis, reconstructed bodies, and domestic absurdity. Repetition and symmetry meet news images, advertisements, organic surfaces, mechanical forms, and private snapshots. The exhibition makes visible how personal experience, popular culture, and societal tensions intertwine.

The unfinished work as an aesthetic experience

The title refers both to photographic silver halide and the hidden inner lining of a garment. Here, image, material, and structure combine. Bircken understands the collage as a metabolic process: new material can be integrated at any time, leaving the work technically unfinished. For visitors, this creates an intense art experience that simultaneously makes closeness and distance, order and overwhelm, recognition and strangeness tangible.

Alexandra Bircken in the art historical context

Alexandra Bircken, born in 1967 in Cologne, studied fashion design at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London. Her artistic practice developed from engagement with fashion, body, material, and object. She participated in the 58th Biennale di Venezia in 2019 and has exhibited solo shows at, among others, Secession Vienna, Fridericianum Kassel, Museum Brandhorst Munich, and KINDL – Center for Contemporary Art Berlin. Since 2023, she has been teaching at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf.

Conclusion: Image worlds in motion

Silver Lining promises an exhibition that understands the exploration of the work as an open process. Between photography, collage, readymade, and sculpture, an atmospheric landscape of images emerges where meanings constantly change places. Those seeking contemporary art, cultural education, and a multifaceted aesthetic experience should definitely experience this exhibition live at the Langen Foundation.
