Alexandra Bircken: Silver Lining – a visual archive between body, material, and image culture

At the Langen Foundation, Alexandra Bircken invites you to an extraordinary examination of her work with Silver Lining. The centerpiece is a twenty-three meter long collage made of photographs, newspaper clippings, magazine pages, screenshots, readymades, and her own materials that the artist has collected and created since the early 1990s. The exhibition connects personal memory, popular image worlds, and contemporary sculpture to create a dense art experience.

A tour through the artist's universe

The expansive work unfolds like a continuously flowing visual archive. Individual fragments are initially readable, but it is their relationships that generate new meanings. Photographic material, everyday objects, and cultural finds engage in a dialogue that is organized not chronologically but through formal echoes, recurring structures, and shared textures.

Six constellations between order and absurdity

The curation follows six interconnected constellations: ornamental order, commercialized femininity, raw material, circulating crisis, reconstructed bodies, and domestic absurdity. Grids, repetitions, and symmetrical arrangements meet organic surfaces, news images, advertising, and mechanical forms. Thus, an image world emerges where social reality, physicality, and private experience intertwine.

Between collage and sculpture

Silver Lining forms a counterpoint to Bircken's sculptural practice. While her three-dimensional works raise questions about materiality, body, and social life, the collage develops this inquiry from a variety of individual fragments. The relationship between the elements takes precedence over the finished individual object. Selection, arrangement, and connection become acts of art themselves.

A work in metabolic change

The installation remains open as a process. New material can be incorporated while older image components appear in altered contexts. The title simultaneously refers to the silver halide of the photographic image and the lining of a garment that gives support to an outer form. In this double meaning, the idea of a hidden structure that becomes visible through accumulation condenses.

Alexandra Bircken in contemporary art

Alexandra Bircken, born in Cologne in 1967, studied fashion design at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London and initially worked as a designer. Her artistic practice straddles sculpture, installation, textile, fashion, and found materials. She has participated in the 58th Biennale di Venezia and has had solo exhibitions at the Secession Vienna, Fridericianum Kassel, Museum Brandhorst Munich, and KINDL – Center for Contemporary Art Berlin. Since 2023, she has taught at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf.

Conclusion: Aesthetic experience at the Langen Foundation

Visitors can expect an intense exhibition atmosphere where image, material, and memory constantly change their positioning. Silver Lining opens a concentrated engagement with visual culture, body images, and the connections between personal archives and social presence. Those who want to experience contemporary art as a sensual, exploratory, and educational experience should definitely visit this exhibition live.
