Alexandra Bircken: Silver Lining – a visual archive between body, image, and material
The exhibition Silver Lining at the Langen Foundation is dedicated to an extraordinary, twenty-three-meter-long collage by Alexandra Bircken. Photographs, newspaper clippings, magazine pages, screenshots, readymades, and original material come together to create a dynamic visual space that the artist has been continuously expanding since the early 1990s.
A tour through the artist's universe
Bircken's work moves between personal memory and popular image culture. The individual fragments remain clearly readable at first, but transform into an open, almost abstract composition in their surroundings. Repetition, grids, symmetry, textures, and formal echoes create a dense exhibition atmosphere where meanings constantly change direction.
Six constellations between order and crisis
The curation reveals six recurring constellations: ornamental order, commercialized femininity, raw material, circulating crisis, reconstructed bodies, and domestic absurdity. Cosmetic images, news motifs, organic materials, mechanical forms, and private snapshots interact with one another. This results in an examination of works that touches on both societal image worlds and questions of corporeality, technology, and everyday life.
Collage as a continuous process
Silver Lining forms a tense counterpoint to Alexandra Bircken's sculptural practice. While her sculptures explore materiality, body, and social life in three-dimensional forms, the collage relies on the network of fragments. No image possesses a closed priority; meaning arises from proximity, contrast, and repetition.
The title also refers to photographic silver halide and to the hidden lining of a clothing item. In this, Bircken's interest in visible surfaces and hidden structures condenses. The work appears as a metabolic archive: it continuously takes in new material and remains technically unfinished.
Alexandra Bircken: Fashion, sculpture, and contemporary art
Alexandra Bircken was born in 1967 in Cologne and studied fashion design at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London. After working in fashion, she developed an independent artistic practice that connects textiles, everyday objects, organic materials, and industrial forms. Her works have been shown, among others, at the 58th Venice Biennale, as well as at the Secession Vienna, Fridericianum Kassel, Museum Brandhorst Munich, and KINDL – Center for Contemporary Art Berlin.
The exhibition is curated by Nadim Samman. Bircken has been teaching at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf since 2023 and lives and works in Berlin and Düsseldorf. For art enthusiasts, the exhibition offers a precise insight into a central position of contemporary art, intertwining fashion history, sculpture, installation, and visual culture.
Art experience at the Langen Foundation
The Langen Foundation at the Rocket Station Hombroich combines contemporary art with a clear, light-oriented museum architecture. In this spatial context, the long collage unfolds its special effect: the eye wanders along colors, shapes, surfaces, and image motifs, while the aesthetic experience oscillates between concentrated observation and surprising irritation.
Conclusion: An exhibition as an open visual memory
Silver Lining awaits visitors as a multifaceted art experience about memory, body, media, and social reality. Those who want to experience contemporary collage, material art, and art-historically reflected image worlds directly will find an exhibition of great visual density at the Langen Foundation. The visit invites one to read familiar images anew and to discover the aesthetic experience of art live in space.
