Alexandra Bircken: Silver Lining – a visual archive at the Langen Foundation

With Silver Lining, the Langen Foundation presents an exceptional work by the artist Alexandra Bircken from October 11, 2026. At the center is a twenty-three meter long collage of photographs, newspaper clippings, magazine pages, screenshots, readymades, and original material that Bircken has collected and created since the early 1990s.

A walk through Bircken's image universe

The exhibition unfolds as a walkable visual archive between personal memory and popular culture. Individual fragments remain immediately legible, yet their spatial proximity transforms the collection into an open abstraction. Meaning arises not in isolation, but through repetition, contrast, formal echoes, and surprising proximities.

Between ornament, crisis, and body

Six recurring constellations shape the exploration of the works: ornamental orders with grids and symmetries, commercialized femininity, raw organic materials, circulating images of crises, reconstructed bodies, and a domestic absurdity of everyday life. The collage connects news images, advertisements, corporate presentations, jewelry, cosmetics, private snapshots, and mechanical forms into a multifaceted panorama of contemporary image culture.

A new perspective on sculpture

Silver Lining acts as a counterpoint to Alexandra Bircken's sculptural practice. While her three-dimensional works raise questions about materiality, corporeality, surface, movement, and social life, the collage develops these themes through a multitude of individual fragments. The network replaces the closed object; the selection becomes an artistic act itself.

Material, light, and hidden structures

The title also refers to silver halide, with which light was fixed on paper in analog photography, and to the textile lining of a garment. Visible image surfaces meet a hidden inner structure. This creates an exhibition atmosphere in which photographic material, textile associations, traces of everyday life, and social image worlds condense into a continuing work.

Alexandra Bircken in the art historical context

The artist, born in 1967 in Cologne, studied fashion design at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London and developed an independent position in contemporary sculpture and installation through her engagement with clothing, body, and material. Her works have been shown in the Secession Vienna, Fridericianum Kassel, Museum Brandhorst Munich, and KINDL – Center for Contemporary Art Berlin, among others. In 2019, she participated in the 58th Biennale di Venezia.

Conclusion: Aesthetic experience between fragment and connection

Visitors can expect a concentrated art experience that sets familiar images from everyday life, media, and consumption in new relationships. Silver Lining invites you to sharpen your perception, discover hidden patterns, and experience the aesthetic process of a work that is never fully completed live. A visit to the Langen Foundation promises cultural education, intensive exploration of the works, and an impressive dialogue between image, space, and body.
