Enigma in the Tonhalle: Friendship, Puzzles and Great Violin Artistry
On Friday, November 6, 2026, the concert series Zodiac Signs will take place in the Mendelssohn Hall of the Tonhalle Düsseldorf. The Düsseldorfer Symphoniker, under the direction of Adrien Perruchon, will combine works from the 20th and 21st centuries with virtuosic violin literature and Edward Elgar's warm glowing Enigma Variations.
Alena Baeva opens her Zodiac chapter
At the center is violinist Alena Baeva, who will perform for the first time as Artist in Residence at the Tonhalle during the 2026/27 season. Her stage performance combines technical precision, expressive tonal colors, and a pronounced joy in musical exploration. Together with the Düsseldorfer Symphoniker, she will create an evening concert that leads solo instrument and orchestra into an intense dialogue.
From ancient soundscapes to modern fairy tale worlds
The program opens with Arthur Bliss’ Hymn to Apollo and then moves on to Sergei Prokofiev's Violin Concerto No. 2 in G minor op. 63. Thomas Adès’ Fairy Tale Dances for Violin and Orchestra expands the evening with a contemporary sound language, where orchestration, rhythmic synchronization, and rich instrumentation create special tension.
Elgar’s musical portrait of friendship
After the break, Edward Elgar's Enigma Variations op. 36 will be performed. Each variation musically portrays a personality from Elgar's environment, forming a multifaceted portrait of friendship. Between mysterious motifs, orchestral warmth, and grand crescendos, a finale emerges that concludes the concert evening with emotional depth.
Live atmosphere in the Mendelssohn Hall
The acoustics of the Tonhalle allow the fine lines of the violin to emerge just as much as the grand tutti moments of the orchestra. An evening concert experience with a concentrated audience atmosphere, vibrant string colors, and a direction that connects the different epochs into a coherent musical arc is expected.
Conclusion: Zodiac Signs: Enigma promises a multifaceted classical evening between Prokofiev's Violin Concerto, Thomas Adès’ contemporary sound world, and Elgar's touching Enigma Variations. Those who wish to experience great violin artistry and symphonic live atmosphere should not miss this concert at the Tonhalle Düsseldorf.
